magpieandwhale:

Immigrants Reach Beyond a Legal Barrier for a Reunion

These photos are of Dreamers, children of immigrants without documents for this country, who were brought to the United States and never knew they were “illegal,” reuniting with their deported parents through a border wall in Nogales, Arizona.

If you have any reaction to these photos other than empathy, I don’t really want to know.

Nah I’m angry too

Mad as hell

Cause this shouldn’t be happening

Such a powerful photo. If my parents hadn’t been from Cuba, they could have been DREAMERS. If my parents hadn’t been from Cuba, they might not have status to this day, and would definitely not have their professional jobs and middle class life. If my parents hadn’t been from Cuba, it could be me standing on this side of the border, grasping the hand of a mother who’d been deported after building a life in this country.

Our immigration system is hugely biased and entirely political. My parents aren’t DREAMERs, my parents are now citizens, simply because of the anti-communist agenda of the US government.

I wrote more about this comparison for Colorlines a few years back, but this photo was such a striking reminder of my privilege and how arbitrary it is.

I’m hugely appreciative of their reality, as arbitrary as it was, because it gave both my parents and their families the opportunity to choose a different life. It’s a choice that all immigrants should have.

Radical Doula Profiles: Jasmine Krapf

Teen Mom: I’m not interested in “fighting” anyone’s pregnancy. I am interested in giving folks support and access to control their own reproduction.

A lot of the “stats” about teen moms are:

1. made up. (really! Try chasing down some real sources that aren’t the campaign to prevent teen pregnancy or stayteen or some crap like that – their links to sources are a black hole as far as I’ve been able to trace.)
2. actually stats about discriminatory systems, not individual families. (I was never in my life more encouraged to fail than when I was a pregnant and parenting teen – my teachers literally told me to drop out.)

Also, teenagers (15+) tend to have very easy pregnancies and births (minus all the stress that comes from being consistently treated like crap and discriminated against).

Most teens don’t want to be parents and we should support their access to prevent pregnancy, but that has nothing to do with how we treat young mothers.

A different kind of Mother’s Day celebrationMake your own...

A different kind of Mother’s Day celebration

Make your own card at mamasday.org
